If you want to taste traditional home-style cooking, Samrrudhi Bhojanaum restaurant on Prabhat Road serves such forgotten Marathi dishes! Many cafes serve modern food, but finding traditional heritage recipes from old Maharashtrian households is rare. I visited this quiet spot on Prabhat Road to sample a few now rare regional items.

Bhajani Che Wade

I started my meal with the Bhajani Che Wade. The roasted grain flour blend gives these deep-fried multigrain puris a distinct bhajani flavour. They are not very spicy, but they are packed with rich, nutty flavours from the roasted spices. The puris are soft, flaky, and pair beautifully with the dahi they serve on the side.

Phodnichi Poli

Next, I ordered the Phodnichi Poli. The chapati is tempered with mustard seeds, turmeric, peanuts, and green chillies. The spice tempering adds warmth, while whole roasted peanuts give a great crunch to every bite. It is simple, traditional comfort food. This dish was very nostalgic for me, as it used to be morning ritual where my mom prepared this dish. The taste is amazing and really brought back a lot of memories!

Kolache Pohe

Finally, I tried the Kolache Pohe, which is a classic dish from the Konkan region. They soak flatten rice flakes and mix them with crushed, spicy Mirgund papad. They place the mixture on a plate and pour fresh kol over it. The kol is a liquid made from raw coconut milk blended with tangy tamarind pulp. Every mouthful gives you soft pohe, crunchy papad, creaminess from coconut, and a sharp tang from the tamarind.

If you want to explore authentic regional recipes that are hard to find, head over to Samrruddhi Bhojanaum on Prabhat Road and give these dishes a try. This and other such unique dishes are part of their breakfast menu which ends at 11.45am. After which, they serve their lunch & dinner menu which also has equally unique Maharashtrian dishes.
