Step Back 200 Years in Architecture and Heritage
Located on the Bangalore Pune highway, Rau Garhi is a living monument and tribute to the traditional Maharashtrian architecture. A Garhi refers to a fortified Wada (mansion) constructed on land. Remarkably, this structure represents an architectural style that had not been executed in nearly 200 years.
Built with painstaking craftsmanship, the Garhi features hand-cut stones, lime mortar instead of cement, and traditional brickwork. And also specialized Rohtak domes crafted on-site by artisans brought from Rajasthan.
Historic Woodwork, Peshwa-Era Doors & Vintage Details
Every inch of Rau Garhi has been restored using repurposed, historic materials. The timber used throughout the building was salvaged over years from wadas, old government buildings, and ancient monuments.
The highlight of the architecture are the massive, 300 to 400-year-old Peshwa-era doors. Installed without modern hinges using traditional pivot mechanisms. These doors weigh hundreds of kilograms each and require 10 to 15 people to maneuver. From the moment you step inside, the microclimate created by the thick stone & lime keeps the interior naturally cool & comfortable. Making you feel as though you have stepped back into 18th-century Maharashtra.
Modern Amenities & Traveler Convenience
Rau Garhi offers clean, well-maintained outdoor washrooms, making it a reliable and comfortable stopover for families and long-distance travelers.
