If you are looking for authentic North Indian food, Pune’s 27 yr old hidden gem in Aundh serves Delhi style butter chicken! Delhi Kitchen sits at the end of a small lane in Aundh. Many people miss it because of its location, but it has cooked traditional dishes for 27 years in this location as well as their branch in Pimple Saudagar.
Delhi Style Butter Chicken
I ordered their Delhi Style Butter Chicken first. In Pune, most restaurants make butter chicken sweet. As in the name, Delhi Kitchen does things the Delhi way! Their version is not sweet at all, but it is also not burning hot. The cook balances the spices so the gravy sits right in the middle. The tandoor grilled chicken pieces absorb the masala well. I ate the chicken with butter roti, and every bite tasted like traditional North Indian cooking.
Multani Chicken Kebabs
I also had their Multani Chicken Kebabs. They marinate juicy chicken pieces in a Multani spice blend, hung curd, and aromatics. They skewer the marinated meat and cook it inside a hot tandoor until char grilled. The kebabs have yellow colour and a soft, creamy taste that is not overly spicy. I dipped the pieces into the fresh green chutney served alongside, and the pairing worked exceptionally well.
Dal Makhani with Rice
Next, I tried the Dal Makhani with plain rice. I usually skip Dal Makhani at restaurants because it often tastes bland and needs more salt. Delhi Kitchen surprised me. They simmer the black lentils until soft. Then, they added a special tadka with ground spices to boost the flavour. They use a light hand with butter, so the dish does not feel heavy or greasy. I mixed the dal into my rice, and the combination made a full meal.
Delhi Kitchen proves that you do not need a big main-road location to serve good food. If you want authentic North Indian dishes cooked with correct techniques, and spices, check out this restaurant in Aundh. It has ample seating, but getting a spot for a car park will be difficult.
