Some restaurant names instantly make you curious. Latpat Biryani is one of them.
If you’re from Maharashtra, you’ve probably heard of Mutton Latpat. It’s a fiery Khandeshi mutton preparation loaded with spices and thick gravy. That’s exactly where this newly opened restaurant near Magarpatta gets its name from. But here’s the twist—their signature biryani isn’t Khandeshi at all. Instead, it’s inspired by the famous Ambur and Dindigul biryanis of South India.
Unlike the long-grain basmati biryanis we’re used to, Latpat uses Seeraga Samba rice. It’s a fragrant short-grain variety that’s known to be easier to digest and has a lower glycemic index. The cooking method is also completely different from the North Indian dum style. Here, the meat, spices and rice are cooked together in their own broth. This allows every grain to absorb the flavours right from the start. The biryani is then finished with a final dum over coal, along with a touch of desi ghee.
The kitchen uses only groundnut oil, and the biryani isn’t overloaded with oil or heavy spices. It feels surprisingly light while still being flavourful.
The biryani arrives on a banana leaf, accompanied by a bowl of rassa and dahi-kanda—a very Kolhapuri-style pairing that works perfectly.
I tried the Mutton Biryani!
Rice Verdict: 10/10
Judging it as per its original South Indian style, this rice is exceptional. Every grain of Seeraga Samba is perfectly cooked, fragrant and infused with the flavours of meat broth and desi ghee. I didn’t miss basmati at all.
Meat & Masala Verdict: 10/10
The goat meat is incredibly tender—almost melt-in-the-mouth—but still holds its shape. The masala is fresh, dominated by coriander and garlic rather than fried onions. Since there is no layering, every morsel has the same balanced flavour.
Meat to Rice Ratio: 9/10
A full plate comes with around seven to eight pieces of mutton. The meat is so delicious that you’ll probably finish it before the rice. One extra piece would make it perfect, but if you pace yourself, the ratio works well.
For anyone looking to explore biryani beyond the usual Hyderabadi and Lucknowi styles, Latpat Biryani is a refreshing discovery and a worthy addition as the 11th stop in my Ek Plate Biryani series.
