On Tilak Road near Tilak Smarak, during breakfast hours, you will see a crowd gathered around a small food stall. That could be Madhuchi Gadi which is Pune’s 50 year old legacy food cart on Tilak Road! One unique thing about this cart is that the menu changes every day. This is a beloved morning spot for many locals and also people coming from far and wide. Mr. Madhu Prabhakar Shanbaug started this cart 50 years ago after leaving his job at Badshahi Boarding House just a lane away. A regular customer coined the name “Madhuchi Gadi” 40 years ago.
A Rotating Daily Menu
To keep the food exciting, Madhu Kaka created a scheduled weekly menu that gives everyone a reason to visit throughout the week. On Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, they serve Tarri Pohe, Dahi Pohe, Upit, Gol Bhaji, Idli Sambar, Udit Wada Sambar, and Wadapav. Tuesdays and Fridays, the menu features Matar Usal, Pineapple Sheera, and Upit. Wednesdays and Sundays, you can get Misal, Gol Bhaji, and Upit. Upavas Misal on main fasting days. Every single one of these items has built its own loyal fan following over the years.
Unchanged Taste Across Generations
Today, the current generation runs the stall using the exact same family recipes that Madhu Kaka relied on decades ago. They prepare each item with the same recipes, ensuring the flavor remains completely unchanged. This consistency is the primary reason loyal customers continue to return every morning for decades.
Tarri Pohe
I tried Tarri Pohe on my visit which was on Monday. I expected it to be extremely spicy like the Nagpur style, but it was very comforting. It had a nice depth of flavor and tasted like home-cooked food. The tarri gave a gentle kick of spice in the end without burning my palate.
Gol Bhaji
I also ordered Gol Bhaji, which is another popular specialty here. They served them piping hot, soft, and fluffy. The fritters were juicy inside and had the perfect amount of salt. I found the spice level a bit mild for my personal taste, but the texture was great.
A Decades-Old Morning Tradition
While eating, I talked to several people around the cart. I saw customers from all age groups and walks of life. A few told me that they have come here every morning for breakfast for over ten years. Everyone remembered Madhu Kaka fondly, and they were happy that his next generation serves the same great taste with the same love.
