Hidden inside an old building in Shukrawar Peth, Tuljai Veg Nonveg is the kind of place you might easily miss, but once you find it, you discover a real gem.

Tuljai Biryani, Pune for Ek Plate Biryani series.

This no-frills eatery, run by the Naik family, makes its Mutton Dum Biryani completely from scratch over coal and wood fire. The cooking happens right inside the restaurant, and the smoke from the fire fills the space, creating an aroma that tells you something special is being prepared.

What makes their biryani particularly interesting is the way it is cooked. The entire biryani is prepared in a single vessel. The masala rice and white rice aren’t cooked separately and then assembled. Everything goes into the same vessel and gets proper dum cooking. The result is rice that carries the smoky, earthy flavour of the wood and coal fire throughout.

The spice profile is surprisingly restrained. There are no overpowering masalas here—just enough spice to bring out the flavour of the rice and mutton. It’s a beautifully balanced, aromatic biryani that lets the ingredients do the talking.

For this episode of Ek Plate Biryani, we tried their Mutton Dum Biryani, and the plate scored highly across rice, meat & masala, and meat-to-rice ratio.

₹300 for a half plate
