Imagine an entire house built using 85,000 plastic drinking water bottles collected from garbage, and recycled to create a beautiful two-room house. House of Pet Bottles is the brainchild of architects Rajendra Inamdar and Madhavi Inamdar who initially designed this project for a dog hostel for their dog Scooby. Soon followed by a swimming pool, an amphitheatre with steps to sit around, built using bottles. Even the underground water tank was built using one-litre water bottles.

This effort was an attempt to stop the degradation of nature and the environment by reusing plastic water bottles. Initially, we were planning to have only two rooms on the ground floor, and at the back, eighteen cage rooms for dogs.

“The idea of using plastic bottles came to me in my dreams around twelve or fifteen years ago. So when we started experimenting for this kennel, we decided to use plastic bottles to build this house, and we started this work by adding crushed sand to the pet bottles,” said Inamdar.

We checked the crushing strength of the filled bottles and found that it was two and a half to three times more than our usual 9” bricks. While the main objective was to recycle and reuse plastic waste, we have reused 85,000 plastic bottles so far. We also decided to implement Recycle and Reuse of Building Waste too. While working on a project in Ratnagiri ten years ago, Inamdar had saved 90-100 years old doors and windows, which he had used in his home.

“The main purpose of this project is the recycling and reuse of building waste. We have used plastic bottles to prevent them from flowing into the sea from the rivers. In the slab as well we have used earthen plates as filler material, these are called filler slabs. The earthen plates are sourced locally from Kumbhar Wada,” said Inamdar.

The staircase is also made differently than the usual RCC or fabricated staircase. A cantilevered wooden plank is extended from the bottle wall to make the staircase.

Along with this Recycle and Reuse of Plastic Waste, this furniture from 60 to 70 years ago has also been used. In modern lingo, ‘up cycling’ of the furniture is achieved with an old bed that is almost sixty years old.

This house is now ready to welcome guests to enjoy a peaceful stay at the foothills of Sinhagad fort, enjoying the serene beauty of nature in a reused eco-friendly environment.
