Puneet Issar, who played the role of Duryodhan in BR Chopra’s Mahabharata is still fresh in everyone’s memory. To embark on his journey again, he has written a three-hour play ‘Mahabharat: The Epic Tale’ which will be performed in Pune on August 26 at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch.

The cast of this grand play includes Puneet Issar (Duryodhan), Rahul Bhuchar (Karna), Gufi Paintal (Shakuni Mama), Karan Sharma (Arjun), Harleen Kaur (Draupadi), Sidhanth Issar (young Duryodhan), Danish Akhtar (Bheem) Yashodhan Rana (Krishna), Diksha Raina (Kunti), Aarti Nagpal (Gandhari) and Meghna Malik (narrator, Dharti Mata).

Puneet Issar, who is a writer and director of Mahabharat: The Epic Tale, said, “My version focuses on the friendship between Duryodhan and Karna. It is from their perspective. And it is in poetry. I have tried to tell the whole epic in three hours. BR Chopra’s version had 94 episodes and was from Krishna and Bhishma’s perspectives.”

While speaking about his version focussing on Karna and Duryodhan, Puneet says, “I feel Karna is the noblest character in the Mahabharata and Duryodhan is the reason for the war between cousins. There is no meaning to light if there is no darkness. I believe that history is written by the victors, but what about the vanquished?”

When Sidhanth Issar (plays young Duryodhan) was asked why a theatrical play and not a web series, he responded, “Each medium has a different audience. There is so much content readily available on the Mahabharat, so we had to showcase an impactful content in less time. That’s why we chose theater. We handpicked one of the threads of the Mahabharat, a story of Duryodhan from start to end.”

The play, Mahabharat: The Epic Tale will have its first show at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch, Swargate on 26th August’22. The tickets for the same can be booked here: https://in.bookmyshow.com/plays/mahabharat-the-epic-tale/ET00327695
