Review:
Aatpaat Productions, known for their diverse and unique selection of stories, is back again with yet another enthralling flick ‘Ghar Banduk Biryani’. The film is written by Nagraj Manjule and directed by the debutant Hemant Awtade.

The film, at its core, revolves around the three elements of Ghar – Banduk – Biryani which also makes up for its title. Pallam Daku (Sayaji Shinde) is the commander of a naxalite group working in the region of Kolagad, Maharashtra. His lover Maria gets killed in a tussle with the police. Pallam’s gang constantly yearns for the tasty biryani Maria used to make.

Raya Patil (Nagraj Manjule) is a fearless cop working in the urban region of Pune, Maharashtra. But due to his constant fights with the political groups involved, he is transferred to the violent region of Kolagad. This aggravates his relationship with his wife even further and she refuses to go with him.

Raju (Aakash Thosar) is a natural cook and so brilliant that he can even guess the ingredients just by smelling any dish. He falls in love with a girl but their love story comes to a halt when the girl’s father asks Raju to get a house of his own. This is how all three characters with three motives named GHAR, BANDUK and BIRYANI get entangled in one single witty tale.

The unusual yet a wonderful choice of songs make up for a melodious soundtrack. The soundtrack in itself feels like a character in the film. AV Prafullchandra’s background score is enthralling as well. The cinematography right from the first shot gives you an idea of its essence. The story works like a fine wine, slowly and beautifully giving us a taste of its characters and the premise. The only part where the film lacks is the dragged introduction of the characters in the first half. The first half gets stretched and the second half is a rollercoaster ride. The direction, for a debutant, is also quite seamless.

Coming to the performances of the leads, Sayaji Shinde is at his funniest. He brings out laughs even in the most unusual situations. Aakash Thosar plays the hopeless romantic like he was born to do such roles. Nagraj Manjule kills it as the Singham of Marathi industry. Nobody could have imagined him as the ruthless cop. All the other supporting cast in the roles of the gang members are funny and quirky.

All in all, Ghar Banduk Biryani is a witty and quirky take at the Naxalite issue and all the political policies revolving around it.
