Review:

Directed by Chandrakant Kanse, 8 years apart from its predecessor, Daagdi Chaawl 2 has finally hit theatres. The film is based partly on real stories of the gangster Arun Gawli and the residents of his notorious slum Daagdi Chaawl.

Chief of the Workers Union, Vilas Kamath, a strong supporter of Arun Gawli, is gruesomely shot dead at the gates of Daagdi Chaawl. But who dared to kill a man with Daddy’s backing. We go a few days into the past to find out the real reason and then the movie starts seamlessly to unfold the incidents.

At the same time, we also move forward with Surya’s story. He has left Daagdi Chawl and the crimes, trying to lead a peaceful life with his wife and son in Alibag. But will the political turmoil suck Surya back in the chaawl is what we are to see.

Makrand Deshpande as Daddy aka the gangster Arun Gulab Gawli is back with his spine chilling act. It’s been 8 years since the last one and yet he hasn’t changed a bit. His heavy dialogues still work the same creating the same fear. The quintessential one, “Chukila Maafi Nahi” will go down as the best for decades to come.

Ankush Chaudhary also shines as Surya. It Feels like the good old times of gangster Ankush movies are back. Pooja Sawant also gives a commendable performance. Other supporting cast makes up for a brilliant and apt casting.

The powerful dialogues and their delivery will give you goosebumps for sure. The fast paced screenplay and story works for the film. And so this one doesn’t feel like an unnecessary sequel unlike the plethora of sequels we have been getting this year. The background music is chilling and makes the film more gripping. The songs are very few but aptly placed.

The film does get predictable at times. And also except the fear and thrill, the other emotions don’t transpire at all. With all the source material available with the director and the writer, the film could have been so much more and larger than life. But maybe due to budgetary reasons the makers settle for the lacklustre approach.

Overall Daagdi Chawl 2 is a gripping thriller with the right amount of action which will definitely leave you wanting for more. Definitely above the rest of the sequels that hit screens this year. Daddy is back to instill fear in your minds!!!
