Movie Review:

Directed by Makrand Mane, Baap Lyok, is an absolute gem. Marathi cinema’s stubborn willingness to keep exploring is a good sign for independent filmmakers.

Sagar (Vitthal Kale) is a jobless young man about to get married. Sagar’s father, Tatya (Shashank Shende) is frustrated by Sagar being a liability to the family. Soon begin Sagar’s hidden meetings with his soon to be wife (Payal Jadhav).

It has been 5 years since Sagar left his job in Pune and moved back to the village. That is what keeps bugging Tatya and gives birth to a bittersweet relationship between him and Sagar. They are always at odds with each other for no particular reason.

When the time comes to distribute the wedding invitations to their far off relatives , both of them hesitantly set off on a journey that beautifully characterises the tension and love between them. Coming of age needs you to assume responsibilities, but familial authorities also need to relay it off. This father-son journey paints such a transfer of responsibility.

The beautiful and breezy cinematography by Yogesh Koli unfolds the relationship layer by layer. The screenplay jointly developed by Makrand Mane and Vitthal Kale is very closely knit and will definitely make you read between the lines. The title song sung by Ajay Gogavale and penned by Guru Thakur will definitely etch itself in history as one of the best musical pieces on a father.

Shashank Shende and Vitthal Kale’s portrayal of father-son is incredible. Their comic timing, chemistry, the constant cussing; they tick off all the boxes. Payal Jadhav as the wife does a good job too.

All in all, Baap Lyok starts like a breezy morning with lots of laughter and takes wild turns full of tears. You just love the feeling of seeing such beautiful films coming out of Independent Marathi Cinema. Definitely recommended and take your father or son with you, if you can.
