Beed Special Biryani in Mulshi!

Not every biryani needs a long list of powdered masalas to impress you. At RJ Mutton Khanawal in Chande village, Mulshi, I tried a Beed Special Marathwada-style Mutton Dum Biryani that keeps things simple and focuses on the natural flavours of mutton, whole spices, and Gharguti ghee. Marathwada biryani in Pune.

Located around 30 km from Pune, this place is worth visiting if you enjoy fragrant biryani with subtle spices.

A Biryani With Hyderabad Influence

Beed has a fascinating history. Before Independence, it was part of the Hyderabad province. Hyderabad merged into the Indian Union in 1948, and Beed eventually became part of Maharashtra. This historical connection helps explain the Hyderabad influence on the region’s food culture, including its biryani traditions.

Here at RJ Mutton Khanawal, the biryani follows a traditional approach. There are no powdered masalas, not even turmeric. The ingredients include whole spices, curd, fried onions, and homemade Bilona ghee.

The biryani is cooked entirely on a coal bhatti using the dum method. The mutton is prepared using the Kacchi biryani technique, where raw marinated meat cooks with the rice during the dum process. The meat slowly cooks in its own juices, spices, and ghee.

Rice Verdict: 10/10

The rice was the highlight for me. It was highly fragrant and cooked in the same vessel as the biryani, absorbing the flavours released during dum cooking. The aroma of homemade Bilona ghee stood out beautifully.

Every morsel had a lovely fragrance without being overpowering. This is the kind of rice that makes you appreciate the basics of good biryani cooking.

Meat & Masala Verdict: 9/10

The absence of powdered masalas makes a noticeable difference. There are no harsh spice flavours competing for attention. Instead, the whole spices, curd, fried onions, and mutton come together to create a balanced flavour profile.

The mutton was well cooked using the dum method. It gets roasted slowly along with the ghee, allowing the meat to absorb the flavours while retaining its character. If you prefer biryani that highlights the natural taste of mutton rather than heavy masala, this one deserves your attention.

Meat-to-Rice Ratio: 7/10

I got three medium-sized pieces and two small pieces of mutton. While the meat was well cooked, the quantity felt a little less compared to the amount of rice served.

If two people are sharing one plate, you might want to order some extra mutton pieces.

Final Verdict

RJ Mutton Khanawal is a hidden gem near Pune for those who appreciate simple, fragrant, and mildly spiced biryani. The rice and the aroma of Bilona ghee are the biggest highlights.
