A team of\u00a0doctors\u00a0at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital (ABMH) successfully performed a\u00a0robot-assisted\u00a0living\u00a0donor liver transplant\u00a0surgery on a 12-year-old girl suffering from end-stage liver disease on March 12.<\/p>\n
The girl patient was diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis leading to end-stage liver disease. \u201cIn the girl\u2019s case, her mother came forward and donated part of her healthy liver, paving way for an early transplant. Otherwise, organ donation is a time-consuming process. We planned for a\u00a0living donor liver transplant\u00a0using our advanced robot-assisted technology to ensure accuracy and faster recovery of the donor,\u201d ABMH\u2019s liver transplant surgeon Sharan Narute said.<\/p>\n
The surgery lasted for six-and-a-half hours. The donor had an excellent recovery and was sent home after three days of the surgery. The girl also responded well and was discharged home on the seventh day after the surgery.<\/p>\n
Rekha Dubey, chief executive officer, ABMH, said, \u201cThis is the first-of-its-kind robotic living donor liver transplant surgery in the Western part of India carried out on a paediatric patient.\u201d
\nThe girl\u2019s mother said, \u201cShe is feeling better and all her health issues have resolved post-transplant surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n
